CaffeineFueled Artist Spotlight: Zach Houston’s Poem Store

it’s been a while since last we wrote, largely due to the even crazier pace life has recently taken for me here in sf.  it’s a good thing but i find increasingly that when not working and enjoying the warm glow of my computer, i’m  generally working in the dark depths of one of sf’s many local theaters.

so, i thought it’d be appropriate (if not slightly ironic) to highlight a local caffeine fueled artist who can be seen by day, liberating himself from the traditional office grind by putting his old school type writer to use.

a weekend or so ago, i happened upon zach houston and had the pleasure of watching him in action – creating impromptu poems for fellow farmer’s market patrons.

though most saturday’s i generally opt for the alemany farmer’s market, i found myself doing errands around the ferry plaza and decided to pop over for a quick visit before my afternoon coffee date.

it was there – as  i first crossed the street and passed the veggie valet booth – that i noticed zach and his sky blue, manual typewriter. his case transformed into a sign declaring the name of this inspirational venture: “The Poem Store.”

Poem Store Sign As Houston once explained, “The Poem Store was born out of a strange brew of intervention of everyday life. It was caffeine-situation inspired.”

my encounter with zach’s guerrilla art was one of the many things that made me happy i’d diverged from my general weekend routine.

he struck a chord that resonated with the life i’d lived as an  “activ.art.ist.” some of you may know i’ve done a great deal of traveling, funding much of my journey as a migrant artist.  i refused to put actual price tags on my work, but instead accepted only what people were willing and able to pay.

this idea of pay what you can worked well in funding my adventures and seems to likewise work for zach.

i walked up just as two women requested a poem on “teeth” but quickly agreed that “obama’s teeth” would be a far more interesting subject.

oh bay area… there’s so much about you that makes me love and laugh harder each day.

zach launched into the task at hand and created a witty collection of words on the fly – using his old school, manual typewriter.

i observed  him create  few of his verbal sculptures  in a flourish of keystrokes. then, he’d pause to read aloud his most recent creation before handing over the shipping label on which he’d typed it.

a crowd started to form a circle around Zach while i was there. some began to que up to put in their requests.

as one might expect here in the bay area, requests included a poem about Jizo -  buddhist guardian of unborn children and travelers.

whatever the topic, Zach accepted the challenge.

our request was not a challenge for him at all. “care to write about caffeine?” we asked.  he answered with a grin and within minutes wrote thus:

impressively written before my eyes

thanks, Zach.  we raise our mugs to you and your artistic endeavors. cheers!  c[_]

Gearing up for New Year with aid of some “Caffeination Information”

Perhaps you can join us most mornings as we find ourselves saying “I Need Coffee!”

At the moment, we’re actually enjoying a lazier afternoon, freed from the office high rise… so we’re actually enjoying a delightful cup of tea. mmmmm.

Sometimes it’s hard for us to just relax and completely ignore the ever-constant to-do list; the social calendar living in the Bay Area is often far more overwhelming than the work calendar. This is not me complaining. OK. So, it’s not a bad thing. We love it. But it can be difficult sometimes to keep up with all there is to do in this area, hence the caffeination! We’re sure you can relate.

Thankfully, the cats are currently napping and giving us a rather zen-inspired lesson on how to just be. We’re learning a lot from these gatos – especially the youngest, Freddie Mercury. He was a feral cat we recently adopted so he’s rather informative regarding  street smarts and survival.  Some of the other things they’ve taught or are teaching us?

  • Be independent yet open to affection.
  • Team up so they can’t tune out; conspiring together really does get you what you want.
  • No need to spend a lot of money on fancy things. Cardboard boxes and paper bags are fascinating. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! …and conserve financially, to boot!
  • Keep things moving! Sure, everything has its place, but that place isn’t necessarily static. Be a mover and shaker at all levels of your life. FYI: It’s more fun to move things when no one is watching…
  • If you can’t get your way, sprawl across the keyboard until you do.
  • Be prepared to climb your way to the top by remaining flexible but willing to brandish claws if need be. Oh, and utilizing the curtains. That’s why they’re there.
  • Take pause to refuel/recharge. Take a nap! Relish it by finding the best patch of warm, sunny glow. (we would advise that humans modify this lesson – especially to be conducive at work – by trying a caffeine nap!)
  • Eat everything on your plate/bowl and be damn well grateful for it – so much so, you meow in appreciation as if to ask for more.
  • Oh, and purr like crazy so everyone can read your mind. Purring is, after all, the universal language.

So, with the help of these furballs, we’re taking time out this afternoon to be a bit more  introspective. To intentionally hit the pause button.

Tonight will be a different story.  May need a dose of C8H10N4O2 for a boost.  (By day we’re a sales/marketing maven, but by night – among many things – we’re a thoughtful thespian.)

Anyway, like many, we plan to consume a bit of C2H5OH to (b)ring in the new year.

We often laugh at the arbitrary units of measure we assign to “time” but nonetheless shall be celebrating. We’re down for almost any excuse to party and relish in gratitude for the wonders in our lives past, present and future.

On the note of the New Year, we’d like to point ya to INeedCoffee.Com’s feature on Mike Rohde:

Mike Rohde: Coffee Achiever (INeedCoffee.com).

Note that I may soon be sporting his “sketchtoon renditions of common and unusual coffee drinks” at the office.

Cheers!  We raise our mugs (and tonight, our glass) in solidarity! c[_]

Housewarming with coffee!

Welcome to our humble abode at WordPress.com. Pardon the dust, the lack of decorations, etc. At least we have the bare essentials – you, me and caffeine!!!

We’ve been somewhat of a nomad for quite some time but have been given the nudge to share at least a semi-permanent address. So we shall.

Please join us over a cup of coffee (or your preferred mode of caffeine consumption – we don’t judge).

No need to take off your shoes. Come as you are. Let us serve up a fresh brew of things that will hopefully give you pause to smile or mayhaps spew out your coffee as you laugh your tuchus off.  (Or not. That would be caffeine abuse.)

What do we ask for in return?

Just stay positive, caffeinated and uber productive doing whatever it is you are passionate about and whatever it is you do best! (Hopefully those two things are one in the same.)

Cheers! c[_]
